Public Holidays and Commemorative Days (Amendment) Act, 2025
Parliament on 25th June 2025 approved the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days (Amendment) Bill, 2025, amending the existing framework (Act 601) governing national holidays and commemorative days. The key changes are:
- July 1 reinstated as a statutory public holiday (Republic Day).
- Shaqq Day introduced as a new holiday for Muslims, to be observed the day after Eid‑ul‑Fitr.
- August 4 removed as Founders’ Day; September 21 reinstated as Founder’s Day in honour of Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
- Flexibility clause: Holidays falling mid-week (Tuesday–Thursday) may now be shifted to Friday; those falling on weekends (Saturday–Sunday) may be observed on the following Monday. The flexibility clause will not apply to religious holidays such as Christmas and Eid.
Implementation: The law allows the President to put this law into effect using an Executive Instrument, following parliamentary approval.
